DOJO RULES and MANNERS

1. How to address Tanemura sensei, or any Genbukan dojo/shibu cho, in a letter

On the envelope write:

Tanemura Shoto sensei

followed by the full address.

The first line in your letter should be:

Dear Tanemura sensei,

and you should end your letter with:

Sincerely yours,

or any similar phrase, followed by your full name and signature.

Use polite language. Try to use clear and simple English.

2. When entering and leaving a dojo, bow to the shrine and to the teacher. When you enter, say: ohayo gozaimasu (good morning), konnichiwa (hello), or konbanwa (good evening). When leaving, say: arigato gozaimashita (thank you).

3. When the teacher asks you to be his uke (receiver), always bow and say onegai shimasu before, and arigato gozai mashita after you finish your part. When you bow to each other keep a distance of six feet, or a hundred and eithty centimeters from the teachr. This is the length of a rokushaku bo, and serves as a safety zone.

4. When you pair up, first bow to each other and say onegai shimasu. When you finish practicing with your partner, bow to each other and say arigato gozai mashita. 5. Do not step over weapons or tools!!!

6. Do not walk absent mindedly close to other practitioners.

7. When thanking the teacher, say ARIGATO GOZAI MASHITA. Do not use a shorter version of that phrase.
